LOCATION: The village name "Matfield" is derived from the Anglo Saxon "feld" (meaning large clearing) and from the farm run by Matta, hence Matfield. The village is made up of period and modern properties and sports one of the largest village greens in Kent. Local children are allowed to fish on the pretty pond situated on the green. Around the green can be seen several tile-hung Kentish cottages, and an impressive Georgian mansion. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, the land was given to Richard Fitzgilbert, the cousin of William the Conqueror. The white weather boarded country Inn, The Wheelwrights Arms was built in 1602, and was originally a farm building. It was then converted into an ale house around 1750. Around 1728 the house known as Matfield House, the splendid Georgian Mansion on Matfield Green, was built by Thomas Bold Marchant, a farmer from Horsmonden, and his wife, Mary, who was a wealthy heiress from Marden. Matfield is notable as the birthplace of the famous World War 1 poet, Siegfried Sassoon, who was born in the house called Weirleigh in 1886. His mother, the sculptor, Theresa Sassoon, planted a tree on the green to commemorate the end of World War I. The tree was blown down in the hurricane of 1987 and had to be replaced.
Matfield village has three welcoming country inns, all serving good homemade bar food with separate restaurants. There is an excellent butchers, situated on the corner of the village green serving top quality meat, vegetables, cheese and bread. Next door is the village store and Post Office and opposite an excellent hairdressers. Matfield has its own thriving cricket club and it is wonderful to walk past or sit and listen to the timeless thwack of leather on willow.
