The house is thought to have been rebuilt in the later nineteenth century as a summer house for a wealthy Gloucester solicitor. It is described by the author of the Victorian Country History as an "ornamental cottage" and by others as being in the Arts & Crafts style.

Longhope is a village in west Gloucesterhsire, situated within the Forest of Dean, England and occupies the most easterly valley in the group of hills which lie between the Severn and the Wye. It is a hilly and wooded parish lying 15 km west of Gloucester on Gloucestershire's ancient boundary with Herefordshire close to the Forest of Dean.

The local village of Longhope is located just off the A40 and the name means long, enclosed valley. It is home to Harts Barn house and 'Harts Barn Craft Centre' which is home to independent craft shops, a cafe and the Harts Barn Cookery School.

At the end of the village you will see All Saints Church which dates back to the 12th century. Opposite the church is Court Leet which was once the local court and the adjacent timbered cottage was the gaol..

There are a range of handy supermarkets including Morrisons, Lidl, Co-op, Tesco and a useful petrol station. I am reliably informed that there is a Budgen's opening shortly just two miles away from The Mount.
